Ear pain on flight

Last time I was on a plane I got severe ear pain that made my whole right ear ring/muffled/in pain and it lasted through my first flight my layover and my connecting flight. What can I do to prevent this. Also I heard taking out earwax can help but I am flying in 12 hours, would it be more harmful to get rid of it so close to the flight?
