My message to another host about missing amenity

Context: my not-currently-active listing is a mother in law unit in my mom's house that has been used as an Airbnb seasonally, but is also used for other things, ie, a place for elderly/infirm grandpa to live. I administer the listing for my mom because wasn't hip to the platform (at least at first), but the proceeds go to her and it helps her stay in her house, as a rural elder. So needless to say, I'm pretty 'passionate' about Airbnb. Anyway, I'm on an anniversary trip, and this is a message I sent to my host about the fireplace here: ''Good morning, ----! I found online a fireplace company that delivers, and when the delivery person arrived, I showed him a picture of the fireplace. He explained how to use it, and it's extremely easy! Now we have a gallon of ethanol. It cost 30 dollars to have it delivered. When I was planning this trip to celebrate my anniversary with my boyfriend, I specifically applied the "fireplace" filter for the romantic ambiance. So, you can imagine my disappointment when I asked you how to use it (twice!) and your response was basically... to tell me to get rekt. I don't say this with ill intent. I say it as an Airbnb host, with concern, which is why I'm writing this message instead of leaving a bad review. If you have an amenity in your listing (like pool access, BBQ, air conditioning, etc.), guests are supposed to be able to use it. It's okay to have amenities that guests can't use, but you can't include them in the listing. For example, my Airbnb has an outdoor fireplace that I don't want guests to use, so it's not in my listing, it doesn't appear in the photos, and I don't provide firewood. If you advertise an amenity and guests can't use it, they can opt for a partial refund or assistance with changing the reservation according to Airbnb's policy. I'm not going to ask for a refund or anything; I just want you to keep this in mind because all this could be a problem for you in the future. Apart from the fireplace issue, the apartment is great, and we're having a great time. That's why I decided to send you a message about this personally, because I think you're a good host." Do you guys think he's gonna take it to heart? Or do you think he's gonna leave me a bad guest review? I really don't want to be mean to him, but also I think it's unacceptable that he lists this fireplace as an amenity and has it in the photos, but then I wasn't able to use it without doing a bunch of personal legwork ( which all would have been impossible for a guest who doesn't speak the local language). --- **Post Details:** - **Subreddit:** r/airbnb_hosts - **Author:** u/pancakecel - **Score:** 12 upvotes - **Upvote Ratio:** 73.0% - **Comments:** 97 - **Posted:** 7/8/2025 - **URL:** https://reddit.com/r/airbnb_hosts/comments/1lukhe7/my_message_to_another_host_about_missing_amenity/
