Would you honor a refund request due to generator noise during power outage?
We had two guests stay at our cottage starting 5 days ago and they checked out yesterday. The day they checked in, we had a quick thunderstorm in the evening around 8pm and some trees fell on power lines in my town and knocked the power out. The generator went on. It’s loud, but it’s a top of the line generator and allowed the AC, lights, water etc. to work. The power was restored around 5am. I kept them updated during the evening that the power company was working on it as I was following their outage map. I saw the gentleman the next day and asked how their night was and if it was loud and he said it wasn’t too bad since the bedroom is on the other side of the cottage. This is the first time in 6 years that a guest was here for a power outage, but we have in the listing that we have a generator in case the power goes out and it runs once a week for 5 minutes that’s it’s loud like a lawnmower. They checked out yesterday and I got a message today from the woman asking for a refund for the first night because of the noise. I don’t know what to do. I checked with support and they were not helpful, they said it’s up to me. I think the guest will leave a bad review if I don’t. They might if I do anyway. But given the circumstances it feels excessive to refund an entire night. The whole reason we have a generator is to keep them comfortable. We would have been happy to turn it off if they wanted but they never said anything. What would you do? I want to avoid bad reviews. We are 4.97 out of 125 reviews and the two 4-star reviews sting!! TIA
